Your Career as a
Golf Teaching Professional
and the USGTF

"It just feels good to actually be working on something for
myself rather than for a boss or owner. Everyone should
chase their dreams." --Kevin Forehand, North Carolina

Today's Job Market
Finding a job in today's workplace and tight economy is no easy task. Furthermore, the looming recession and fear of inflation has forced many companies to scale-back and eliminate job positions. This is a reality that impacts all job seekers; from the recently graduated youngster to the experienced manager, job security and job openings are becoming more rare. However, despite the seemingly negative atmosphere, the current environment gives all of us the opportunity to take a step-back and re-evaluate our career choices.

The Popular Game of Golf
As the game of golf has become more affordable and more visible on television, it has grown at an incredible rate. Chances are, if you are reading this, you love the game of golf and perhaps have shied away from it in terms of a career for a variety of reasons. Regardless of why you may have not looked to the wonderful game of golf for your career, the United States Golf Teachers Federation®, the nation's largest organization of strictly golf teaching professionals, is here to provide some guidance.

USGTF Certification Courses
Over 17,000 teaching professionals and avid golfers have turned to us to provide them with their golf teaching certification. Recently, the USGTF expanded their offering to include a 2-day Level I certification course, a 4-day Level II certification course, and the 6-day Level III full certification course, the cornerstone course of our organization. Now, it is more convenient and even more affordable than ever to get started or simply experiment with the possibilities of a golf-teaching career.

Any of the USGTF certification courses prepare you and provide you with the tools to be a successful golf teacher at any level (e.g., beginner, advanced, women only) and in any capacity (full-time, part-time).

Teaching Career Opportunities
As for actual positions you may be able to fill once certified as a USGTF teaching professional, there are a variety of options. Many of our members are head teaching professionals at public or private country clubs. Also, many are employed at summer golf camps full-time or part-time to supplement their income. High schools and colleges alike are typically on the lookout for experienced golf teaching professionals as well. Retail golf outlets are very receptive to having a certified golf teaching pro to work in the shop to assist customers with product selection and provide a teaching studio; similar to how many men's stores have a tailor on staff. Also, don't overlook the possibility of employment at a driving range, indoor facility, or the increasingly popular golf learning centers. For the entrepreneurial-type, you may be able to achieve the greatest level of success and personal satisfaction by starting your own business, whether it be as a private instructor, golf driving range, or golf teaching facility, among many other possibilities. If people enjoy being around you and if you enjoy being around people, you will inevitably see your database of clients grow and naturally achieve success in your new golf career.

Expand Your Golf Choices
If you do not consider yourself an "in the trenches" type of golf instructor or professional, the USGTF can still help. Our certification courses provide you with the technical knowledge and skills to allow you to work in many other capacities, aside from simply teaching the game. You could specialize in video training or golf swing analysis. Or perhaps you could be a freelance writer for a golf magazine or the golf section of the local newspaper. On this note, some of our professionals have authored and published their own books on learning and playing the game of golf. Many golf teaching professionals also include club fitting and club making to their repertoire. If you are the outgoing, sociable sort, you could initiate a career involving corporate golf outings.

A New Career
The bottom line is that the USGTF is a great way to start a career in golf or re-step your career from the traditional "business place" and look to the game of golf that has brought you so much enjoyment over the course of your life for your livelihood on a full-time or part-time basis. Our certification courses, regardless of what level you wish to participate in, provide you the tools and knowledge to launch a successful career in golf. At all certification courses you are issued a book entitled "Marketing Yourself as a Golf Teaching Professional." We also incorporate a one-hour discussion on the subject and we have a video tape as well designed specifically for how you can best utilize your teaching skills.

The Right Place for You
Please take the time to request a brochure or to review our many USGTF member profiles, each with a unique insight on how he or she has used his or her USGTF certification to take a great game and translate it into a successful golf career move.
